Google Earth is a geographic browser -- a powerful tool for viewing, creating and sharing interactive files containing highly visual location-specific information.

Google Earth Basic Notes

View 3D Models in Google Earth!

Adding Content (.kml .kmz files)

  • To view KML Gallery content while using Google Earth:
    1. In the Places panel, click Add Content. A browser window opens and displays the KML Gallery.
    2. Click Open in Google Earth beside any content that interests you.

  • You can also Add Content downloaded from other sites such as the following:

A tech learning note: Google Earth opens files with the extension .kmz or .kml.kml = Keyhole Markup Language -- the file format for modeling and storing geographic features such as points, lines, images, polygons, and models for display in Google Earth and Google Maps. KML files are often distributed as KMZ files, which are zipped KML files. When a KMZ file is unzipped, a single "doc.kml" is found along with any overlay and icon images referenced in the KML.

Google Search for Google Earth .kmz files
  • Go to Google Search http://www.google.com
  • Click "Advanced Search" Type a keyword for your search (ex. "manatees")
  • In the "File Format" window, choose .kmz
  • Click "Search" -- See what Google Earth files have already been created related to your subject!!

Edit Placemarks and the Description Field (excerpt from Google Earth Help file)
  • Right click on the Placemark > Choose Properties
  • Valid web URLs typed in the Description Field are automatically converted to HTML and can be clicked on from the info balloon to produce the related web page in the web window.
  • Many HTML tags are respected, such as font, style, and table tags. If you are familiar with HTML, you can be quite creative in how your descriptions are formatted! All HTML tags should be properly closed.
  • You can include images in your description using the IMG HTML tag to refer to either:
When you email that placemark to another person, local images are included.

Educators can get a free upgrade to the ProVersion of Google Earth by emailing Debra Kettman – GEEC@google.com

When inquiring about the ProVersion of Google Earth, the following is the response from D. Kettman:

My Name is Debra and I am following up on your recent request to participate in the Google Earth Education Initiative. I wanted you to know that Google Earth "free" accessible on line is available to download onto your computer or your school's servers and used by all who have access providing it is not being used commercially, for business or any other venue used to generate revenue. Under most conditions this option should fulfill the majority of your student / teacher needs. Google also has a Google Earth Education initiative in process where Google Earth Pro is offered free for one year to qualified educators. The Pro version available through this initiative is normally required when more sophisticated functionality is necessary. As with any software program it is suggested that prior to requesting to participate in this initiative that you would be proficient in using Google Earth by utilizing the "free" version. Both programs are updated at the same time and have the same imagery and clarity. The difference lies in the user features and functionality. Please visit this link to see our comparison chart for specific product details http://earth.google.com /product_comparison.html . Below I have included the qualifications questionnaire for your review and response, should you be qualified and wish to participate in the program. Please address all questions asked.
The program, involves outreach and distribution of Google Earth Pro to qualified Educators affiliated with (employed by) lower, middle, and upper schools; accredited community and four year colleges, universities and graduate schools; selected vocational training programs; certain education oriented NGOs, public access museums and academic libraries. This wide distribution of the advanced version of Google Earth is provided for one full year as a means to increase Google Earth technology applications focused on curriculum. In return, we ask for your contribution to a forum of educators facilitated by the Google Earth Community found by visiting our site at: http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb /ubbthreads.php/Cat/0 or http://groups.google.com/group /google-for-educators, where you will be joined by other educators seeking collaborative opportunities with their peers for the benefit of their students. This information in the form of a lesson plan or detailed testimony outlining your successes will foster incentives for creativity and innovation which ultimately will evolve to provide the basis for enhancements geared toward curriculum development.
To participate, please return your completed application to GEEC@google.com . Should your organization qualify you will receive notification via email with detailed instructions on setting up your account and contact information for Google online support.
